Gas price fever broken? Average down for second week straight.

aaa-logo.jpgGood news for holiday weekend drivers: Average gas prices fell a few pennies for a second straight week, the Automobile Club of Southern California reports.

The average price for a gallon of regular in Orange County: $4.559.

That compares to a peak of $4.598 a gallon set June 19. But it’s still a 47 percent increase from the $3.067 a year ago.

Don’t expect prices to fall far any time soon. August crude oil futures trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange closed up $1.76 at $145.33 — another historic record price.

For anyone thinking of hitting the road this weekend, Yolo County — about 435 miles from Santa Ana — claimed the lowest average gas price in California at $4.483 per gallon of regular.

Feel like gambling? Las Vegas — 260 miles from Santa Ana — averaged $4.261 for a gallon of regular.

“Holiday travelers will find very similar gas prices across the state, even in regions like Santa Barbara and San Francisco that are typically much more expensive for gasoline than other California cities,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “Nationally, gas prices are moving up again in many other states after taking a breather last week and 36 states now have averages above $4 a gallon. But California prices are still declining for now.”
